All in One Printers - A Must Have For Small Business?

With 2008 proving a testing time for all business - especially small business - a different perspective now applies to expenditure on new office equipment.

The All-In-One could well become the best option for any small business contemplating the purchase of a copier, fax, printer or scanner for their office. Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Canon, Samsung, Fuji-Xerox and Brother all have an offering of some sort that could solve many of the dilemmas confronting the small business owner or manager in making this decision.

The problem now is that the traditional photocopier seller will confront a prospective client with many reasons why committing to a five year contract - the magic of being given a “FREE” copier sounds fantastic until you realize that you have signed up for a minimum number of pages printed or copied each month - whether you actually use them or not - for the duration of the contract.

What this means is that you may well be paying a premium for the device AND you actually have to pay for the privilege of having manufacturer’s warranty - isn’t that a given in any purchase of a new product - a car, a washing machine or a television?

Of course it is but not in the world of photocopier contracts!!

The All-In-One - sometimes called a multifunction device or centre - invariably comes with standard warranty of some sort for no extra charge from the manufacturers mentioned above. You do not have to buy it - it comes as part of the purchase price - and it can be extended or upgraded.

The quality of the components of the All-In-One of 2008 is exceptional and removes the common fear that by purchasing a bundled product you are actually getting inferior components in that bundle - as it used to be in purchasing hi-fi equipment.

Not so any more.

With a little bit of homework or a consultation with a reseller of office equipment who actually cares about his client, you can be sure that the printer, fax and scanner which make up an All-In-One are in actual fact quality components in their own right and can be relied upon to produce quality results.

This is most important with the evolution of office equipment to a level in an office where a minimum of paper is retained and archived, is reliant upon quality scanning so that documents can be archived on computer hard drives - hard drives are less expensive than renting floor space for paper storage.

The common practice of today is that of moving documents - letters, invoices, statements and payments - electronically so that the documents may never have to be printed or, after being printed and used for office procedures, they can be shredded as there is always a copy stored on a computer somewhere. So long as backup procedures are strictly enforced this data is probably safer than the actual hard copy of the past.

In summary, rather than buying a multitude of various devices it may be possible for groups of users to share All-In-One or Multifunction devices because most of the quality products come ready to be connected to a network.

You can actually save money with a minimal amount of research and some professional advice. For all your All in One Printer needs Focus Office Supplies Has the Solution for you.

Computer Printers - Dot Matrix Generation to All-in-One

I remember those dot matrix computer printers which were screeching and screeching as they slowly printed out your documents. They used to make lot of noise, annoying but they were high technology of that time. Since then computer printers have come a very long way. Nowadays, not only you got high speed printers but also you have fax, copy, scanner included which means all office instruments aggregated in one compact device. The good point about this multifunction peripheral is that it doesn’t cost too much.

External CD Burners

There are now ways for anyone to get a copy of their favorite videos or music without having to spend much money. One of these is through CD burners, which are now available on the market. There are two types of CD burners: internal and external. The former is installed inside your PC, connected directly to the central processing unit. These are the most common CD drives, like the CD-ROM that many people already use frequently. An external CD burner connects to your PC through a USB port and provides the same functionality with added portability.

Computer Diagnostic Tools

Computer diagnostic tools can provide a very basic, yet very crucial function. It can output an error message that indicates a problem with a program or device. Windows uses a built in error reporting feature that runs whenever there is a issue with a program. Diagnostic tools benefit users because they help explain why malfunctions are happening.

Over time, a computer may seem as if it is slower than it once was for no apparent reason. Hardware devices can malfunction and problems can appear out of nowhere. Because people today have become so dependant on their computers, these problems can be irritating and problematic. Too often do people try to resolve a computer issue by concentrating on the symptoms. A diagnostic tool will help you identify the reason for the issue rather than concentrating on the symptoms.

Having the right tools to find the source for the problem or computer error can save you time, money, and even a little peace of mind. Focusing on removing or masking the symptoms will only be a temporary fix as they will most likely return. This is when the right tool can save you time as it will prevent you from having to resolve the same issue over and over again. Having a tool to pinpoint the problem will allow you to go straight to the source and replace the part necessary to get rid of the issue permanently.

Diagnostic tools are available in several forms. The most widely used for is a software tool. These diagnostic tools scan your computer and its registry for any irregularities it may find. If they find anything out of the ordinary, many of them can even fix the problematic registry keys.

If the problem you are having resides with a physical hardware component, a software program may not be able to detect the root of the problem accurately. While there are some software applications out there that are capable of detecting some hardware related issue, sometimes it will just require another kind of tool. To solve pesky hardware issues you can purchase diagnostic tools for your computer that connect to specific components on your PC.

These hardware diagnostic tools connect to the devices on your computer to test them and ensure that they are operating appropriately. While these tools will usually cost more than their software counterparts, they are usually a lot better at finding hardware issues with your computer and will pay for itself in the long run.

In short, spending a little extra cash toward a computer diagnostic tool can be a good way to protect your computer. If you are the type of person who likes to handle issues on your own and get hands-on with your computer, then owning your own computer diagnostic tool is a good way to learn more about your computer while saving time and money.

Multiple Monitors - Bane Or Blessing?

To use or not to use

When I first saw a person with two monitors for their computer, I thought it was just ridiculous. I mean, how many screens can a person look at? I believed it was about prestige. See what a geek I am, I have three screens! Like having three pianos or five blenders or eight dustpans. Why?

Then I started using two screens on the job. You know, it’s been very accommodating. Now I’m wishing I had one or two more at home. If you’re someone that spends a couple hours a week on your computer mainly for corresponding or paying bills, then having one monitor is probably enough.

If you spend any amount of time at home studying or writing or compiling any kind of media - like your family pictures, videos, and music - two monitors (or more) will not only save you time, it actually relieves tension on your eyeballs.

No, I don’t actually have any “facts” to back that eyeball statement, but from my own experience, I feel less tired using my two LCD screens at work then my one LCD at home. The advantages keep growing as I use them. Organizing research and pages are so much easier. And you get to move your head around diminishing that inevitable cursed kink in your neck or back.

As an editor, it’s been fantastic to have one screen keeping notes and one screen to do work on. There’s so much more space to work with. It’s like the difference between keeping your books and papers piled on a tiny little desk or having a nice big drafting table.

For businesses, having a couple screens or more can make your work speedier, more organized and accessible, and enable you to easily handle several projects at once. For CEOs and busy managers, supervisors, etc., the multitasking advantages will astound you. Your employees will literally sing halleluiah with indulgent utility and convenience.

For gamers, well, most of you already understand the awesome output of two or more screens. Imagine having four to six or more, all combining into one picture! Holy big picture, Batman!

How hard is it?

Yeah, it’d be great to have, you say, but I’m no technogeek. Neither am I, but there are a couple different and mercifully easy approaches to take.

Depending on your PC system, you may be able to plug more than one monitor into the back if you already have more than one port. Your computer has settings in your control panel to add monitors once they are plugged in.

You will probably have to add ports to your PC, which is usually fairly simple and affordable to do. There are adapters, ExpressCards, docking stations, and video cards.

The adapter I’m familiar with uses your USB port to add one additional VGA port to your PC or laptop. This option is super simple and handy for all users.

For you laptop owners, there are ExpressCards or PCMCIA cards that add a port and can be expanded with additional cables for even more ports.

Docking stations are pretty simple, too. They can also have added functions, depending on the station. Stuff like audio connections for your stereo, Ethernet and USB ports, as well as the video ports you’re after.

For those who feel more confident in their technical abilities, you can physically add video cards to your PC box. You can find cards that have two or more added ports on them. These add to your existing VGA or DVI port.

If you want to go all out and get a display system, which would be the easiest, there are complete units that include two to eight screens with awesome software to manage these screens. For people who have a lot going on, like traders, busy corporates, gamers, stock brokers, internet gurus, etc., these systems are worth every penny.

I predict these kinds of setups will eventually replace or be integrated into our TV systems. They probably already are in some circles. I’m not in that circle, but I’m learning. And it isn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

The advantages of having more than one monitor makes sense to me now. Truthfully, I get tired of looking at my monitor. I’d much prefer a book or hard copy in my hands. I can’t wait until that invention hits the market. A book-like computer? Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Until then, having two screens is the closest I can get to having pages. Maybe I’ll even try three.

The LTO is an Open backup tape media which is considered as one of the most innovative and leading tape format. The IBM media products have the new and innovative technologies that have the ability and capacity to work under severe conditions.

The IBM LTO4 is reliable, high speed and robust backup tape cartridge of the fourth generation of LTO backup tape technology. The native storage capacity of the IBM LTO 4 tape is 800GB while the compression capacity is 2:1. Therefore, the compressed storage capacity reaches to 1.6TB. The IBM LTO4 cartridges come in the form of write once, Write Once Read Many WORM and also in rewritable as well.

The LTO 4 ultrium drives benefits its users, because it has the technology to record the encrypted data on the WORM cartridge and rewritable tape cartridge as well. The IBM LTO drives are more reliable and efficient because when ever the drive is accessed, on every use the drive stores the read write media statistical analysis. The IBM backup cartridge offers its users with more capacity per volume for data storing. Therefore less capacity for library cartridge is required for the IBM LTO tape. In this way the backup windows also reduces as well as the volume.

The IBM LTO 4 tape media facilitates its users to overcome the issue of the increased volume of data to be stored. The IBM is a high capacity and reliable storage medium. The IBM tape requires lesser human intervention, space along with other equipment to hold the backup tapes and daily operations. Because, the IBM backup tapes have increased capacity to hold the data.

The IBM backup tape cartridges reduce the operational costs, because lesser number of IBM tape cartridges is able to hold large volumes of data due to their increased storage capacity. In this way time is also saved due to less human interference because of the lesser number of tape cartridges. IBM has developed the LTO 4 ultrium backup tape cartridge which is a high quality, robust and rigid backup storage medium that provides the best results to the enterprises. The LTO 4 drives also provide the features of data encryption techniques, which help to protect the precious and valuable data. The data encryption technique gives an additional advantage to the users for data protection.

The IBM data tapes have been carefully developed and engineered to enhance the data integrity, capacity, reliability and data transfer speed. The IBM LTO cartridges are facilitating and improving the efficiency of the companies around the globe. The IBM backup tape cartridges have been tested many times with the LTO tape drives in order to ensure that the tape cartridges give the best results, hold data for longer period of time and reduce the chances of data loss. The IBM tapes improve the performance of LTO tape libraries and drives.

The IBM cartridges have the technology and ability to work in extreme and harsh conditions in automated as well as the stand alone working environments. The IBM LTO cartridge has LTO CM (cartridge memory) chip. During the media (unload/load) cycles, the CM chip helps to improve and speed up the process of transfer of data with the IBM LTO drives. The color of the IBM LTO4 cartridge is green so that it can be easily differentiated among the other generations of LTO ultrium backup tape cartridges. The IBM LTO WORM (Write Once Read Many) tapes have the new technology to store the data in the format of non rewritable and non erasable. In this way the data can be stored for longer period of time.

The hardware encryption technology of LTO fourth generation along with the WORM technology helps to enhance the data integrity. New and advanced security features have been introduced in order to make sure that the data stored in the IBM LTO tape is kept safe from deletion or alteration.

Virtual Memory - Does it Have a Limit?

‘Virtual memory’ is a term that is heard from the day we are born in today’s society. Everything virtual is more natural to younger generations than the trees of a park or the rippling water of a shallow creek. It seems that more and more can be stored and done by virtual methods every day. But, have we reached the limits of virtual memory usage or have we simply not found the depth of the well to date?

If we are talking about the amount of virtual memory available on the average desktop computer, then the answer is both. Since we haven’t yet capped the size of the personal computer in virtual memory capacity, we can’t truly know if we have found the bottom of the well or not. What we can ascertain is whether each individual spigot to the well has a depth equal to the algorithm that rules the ratio of all virtual memory on a system to the amount of available and usable virtual memory on the same system.

If your system has 4GB of available virtual memory, then only 3GB can be accessed and used. The additional 1GB is used for operational resources that allow you to run all those applications that are using the available virtual memory. If it were available, there’d be no memory space for your computer to keep track of all the applications running on your computer.

Each year, personal computers grow larger as we begin to demand more space for our daily lives in the virtual realm. Many people work from home and are finding that running a business on a computer requires large amounts of virtual memory. Computer manufacturers and designers listen, increasing the much coveted space available virtually for our use.

If the trend of growth in the size of computers increases as it has been for several more years at least, then we haven’t come close to the bottom of the proverbial well. We have only dipped a few buckets and withdrawn a sampler of what’s available. With this in mind, our current limitations won’t be the same as our future limitations.

If you do try to run more than your computer will handle, your computer will complain with a warning that it can’t run the requested application because it is out of memory. At this point, you can shut down applications you may not be working on and then run the desired application, or you can invest in some memory upgrades. Keep in mind that not all systems are capable of being upgraded easily, as is the case of the laptop computers. If you are forever finding yourself out of memory, it may be best to cut back on how many applications you run simultaneously.

Technology will keep increasing our available virtual memory, but for now there is a limit in the infinite world of virtual memory upon our desktops and laptops. Perhaps in ten years, that limit will no longer exist. However, maybe we already have plenty of virtual memory since more memory only indicates more work, more hours spent producing, and less living.

Printer Ink Page Yields

Page yield is the total number of pages that you can print with a given ink cartridge. Traditionally each printer manufacturer would run their own differing tests to determine page yields and customers ran the risk of comparing apples to oranges when determining the printer page yields from different manufacturers.

Now, fortunately printer manufacturers work with the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and have developed a set of industry standard tests to measure inkjet cartridge page yields.

What is ISO?

ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 156 countries, on the basis of one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system.
ISO is a non-governmental organization: its members are not delegations of national governments, as they are in the United Nations. Rather, ISO occupies a special position between the public and private sectors. Some of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their governments, while others represent national partnerships of private-sector industry associations.

Therefore, ISO is able to act as a bridging organization in which consensus can be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society, such as the needs of stakeholder groups like consumers and users.

These tests consist of printing a standard set of five pages, continuously, until the ink cartridge has reached the end of its life. This continuous method of testing is obviously less time consuming and expensive for the manufacturers to perform and whilst may allow an “apples to apples” comparison, bears little resemblance to real life situations.

The five pages chosen for example are unlikely to be replicated in actual day to day print situations and industry experts estimate that ink printer users only print a few pages at a time and that hours, if not days can pass before an other print job is requisitioned. This type of start/stop printing can dramatically reduce the page yield obtained from a cartridge. Inkjet printers use some ink to keep the printhead nozzles clear to allow the ink to flow smoothly and most printers perform a maintenance operation on start up which also depletes the volume of ink in the cartridge.
Some page tests are measured on page coverage of only 5% for black print, the standard letter test, and areas of solid black or areas of greyscale on the page will have an effect.

Canon are now alone amongst the major printer manufacturers to continue to display the volume of ink contained in their cartridges and it is unlikely they will continue to do so if their competitors have abandoned the practice. HP and Epson until recently had this information available, however on the latest HP packaging only a page yield figure is given and the latest Epson packaging contains no information at all to aid the consumer in a choice. Lexmark have had a tradition of vagueness when it comes to page yield information on packaging and they have reached new levels of ambiguity with their latest XL cartridges, stating “2x More pages” and in the small print telling you that the cartridge will last twice as long as another Lexmark cartridge.

It is true that different printer models would yield differing page yields with the same volume of ink, but it is clear this latest trend sheds little more light on the thorny question of how long an ink cartridge should last.

How to Find a Blu Ray Drive

Most people are becoming more familiar with Blu ray technology in the sense that they have at least heard of Blu ray discs (called “BDs”). What many people do not realize, however, is the blu ray technology will one day replace DVDs. A Blu ray drive uses special discs that allow for huge amounts of memory to be recorded onto a disc at an incredibly fast speed.
